The Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) XI declares the municipality free from malaria as a result of integrated efforts and strategies, and maximizing resources in the elimination of this disease.
Monkayo was given the disease-free zone award to recognize its efforts under the responsive leadership of Mayor Ramil Gentugaya and at the same time to challenge in sustaining its disease-free status. This is a culmination of all the concerted efforts of the local and national government and stakeholders in the municipality for effective, efficient, and sustained implementation of the program.
Malaria is the 8th leading cause of morbidity in the Philippines, affecting most Filipinos of productive age group, and vulnerable groups which includes pregnant women, children and indigenous population groups, and continues to be a major impediment to human and economic development in area where it persists as stipulated in the Proclamation No. 1168, s. 2006.
